The Carmel Mission was founded June 3, 1770, by Padre Junipero Serra. The original church and dwellings were temporary structures of wood and adobe. The permanent church was finished and dedicated in 1797, and still stands today as an active parish. The Mission has five museum buildings full of art and artifacts, along with beautiful gardens and courtyards—all open to the public.
